D & D Estimates: Omega West Reactor
The Omega Facility was constructed in
1943. Between 1943 and 1955 the facility
housed five reactors. In 1992 the fifth and
final reactor, Omega West, was shut down. In
1994 the fuel and control blades were
removed and the reactor vessel was drained
of all coolant, placing the reactor in a
safe shutdown mode. Demolition of the entire
facility was executed in 2003.
Contaminants included: Radiation,
Asbestos, PCBs, Beryllium, Lead, and
Mercury.
